STRATFORD (WAOW) -

The Colby pickup truck driver critically hurt in a near head-on crash with a semi-truck near Stratford is improving in a Madison hospital.

A spokeswoman for the University of Wisconsin Hospital said Derek Lindberg, 20, was listed in good condition Tuesday.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department said that alcohol was suspected as a factor in Friday's crash but as of Tuesday no alcohol-related citations had been issued, according to online court records.

Online court records show Lindberg was cited for operating left of the center lane.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department says alcohol is suspected to be a factor in a Stratford crash that happened Friday.

Officials say the near head-on crash involved a semi-truck and a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup, Derek Lindberg, 20, of Colby, was taken to the hospital. Officials at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield say Lindberg was in critical condition and was transferred to a hospital in Madison.

Lt. Dale Wisnewski said the crash happened around 10:45 a.m. on Highway 97 about two miles north of Stratford on Friday. Officials say Lindberg was cited for crossing the center line and alcohol is suspected to be a factor.

Lt. Bill Millhausen said Monday that Lindberg worked an overnight shift and had gotten off work early Friday morning. It was unclear where he had been prior to the crash, Millhausen said, but some indications of alcohol use were evident for investigators to ask doctors at the hospital to do a blood-alcohol test.

No other details were immediately released.

The driver of the semi truck, Mark Knoble, 49, was conscious when he was taken to the hospital, Wisnewski said.
