Big Flats son gets life in prison for killing mom

FRIENDSHIP (WAOW) - A 61-year-old Adams County man convicted of murdering his mother and hiding her corpse in some woods nearly three years ago was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

Circuit Judge Paul Curran ordered that Larry Clark of Big Flats serve 30 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said in a statement.

Following four days of testimony earlier this month, a jury found Clark guilty of seven felonies in the 2010 shooting death of his 79-year-old mother, Marcella Clark, including first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse, forgery and giving false information regarding a missing woman.

Curran sentenced Clark to serve concurrent maximum sentences on six of the convictions, meaning the prison time will be served at the same time as the life prison sentence for the murder, according to prosecutors.

Clark was charged in November 2010 after investigators said they found skeletal remains near the home where he had lived with his mother since about 2006. An autopsy showed Marcella Clark died from a gunshot wound to the back, court records said.

During his trial, Clark took the witness stand for about three hours, telling jurors the shooting was accidental.

Prosecutors told the jury Clark left his mother's body on a tarp in the woods after the shooting and used her checking accounts and credit cards to purchase food and other items at local stores.

Investigators believe the mother's remains were found about four months after she was killed.
