Deaf woman wants lost dog back from its new family

GREEN BAY (AP) -

A deaf Wisconsin woman who lost her dog in March is fighting to get it back -- after she learned it went to a shelter and was adopted by another family.

Susan Heezen tells the Green Bay Press-Gazette that her 5-year-old dog Bear helped her in her daily life. Bear is not a trained service dog, but learned basic sign language and could follow some commands.

Heezen, of Denmark, found out weeks after Bear disappeared that it was at a shelter 23 miles away, and had been adopted. The Lakeshore Humane Society says Bear didn't have an ID tag or a microchip to identify its owner.

Due to privacy laws, Heezen doesn't know who adopted bear. But she's going public with her situation, in hopes of getting Bear back.
