Wet weather delays farmers from working in their fields

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

The late start to spring and wet weather are blamed for keeping farmers out of their fields.

Standing water can be found in some fields which  makes it tough for them to plant crops.

Weston farmer Mark Zastrow says it's been a tough way to start the growing season.

"Everybody is behind this year due to the weather. Every time it rains you get further behind," says Zastrow.

Typically, Zastrow harvests his first hay crop in early June. This year he says the crop simply hasn't had enough time to grow.

For some farmers, the hay shortage dates back to last summer's drought. Zastrow says some farmers have been buying hay to feed their animals, for months.

Wisconsin agriculture reports for this week,  show 2% of farmers report a first cutting of alfalfa, compared to 59% in 2012.
