Obama calls for end to mental illness stigma

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says he is convening a conference on mental illness to bring the issue "out of the shadows."

Obama is speaking Monday at the opening of the day-long White House conference. The event is part of Obama's response to last year's shooting massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

The president emphasized that most people with mental health problems are not violent. But he says that untreated mental illness can lead to larger tragedies.
