Northern Wis. woman pleads not guilty in drug death

RHINELANDER (WAOW) - A 27-year-old St. Germain woman pleaded not guilty Monday to reckless homicide in the December death of a man from a heroin overdose.

Jennifer Heiting was charged with first-degree reckless homicide by delivering drugs in the death of David Matthew Stahl. She pleaded not guilty during an appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court.

Authorities say Stahl died of heroin toxicity on Dec. 10 at his rural Oneida County home.

Richard Lewis, 27, of St. Germain, is also charged with first-degree reckless homicide in Stahl's death. He pleaded not guilty to the charge in April.

According to the criminal complaint, two days before Stahl's death, Heiting arranged for Stahl to sign for a Federal Express package containing heroin that Heiting had purchased. The agreement called for Stahl to keep two "bindles" of the drug as payment, which Heiting gave Stahl as Lewis watched, the complaint said. The complaint said investigators found a syringe, spoon, lighter, "tie off," scissor and two small baggies containing heroin on a table next to Stahl's bed.

Heiting is to return to court Aug. 6 for a pretrial conference. Lewis' next court appearance is a pretrial conference June 25.
