Possible merger in the works for area fire departments

Two fire departments in our area may undergo major changes.

The Weston village administrator has called a news conference for Tuesday, to discuss the future of the Weston and Rib Mountain fire and EMS departments.

The news release was sent out Sunday afternoon, stating the town of Rib Mountain and the Village of Weston will jointly hold a news conference Tuesday morning. Few details are being released at this time, but Newsline 9 has been in touch with multiple sources connected to the departments, who confirm this conference involves the possible merger of the two departments.

On Monday, the Weston village administrator, Weston fire chief and Rib Mountain fire chief would not confirm or deny the possible merger until after the news conference.

Right now the Weston Fire Department has 44 volunteer and full-time firefighters. The town of Rib Mountain Fire Department has four full-time firefighters and 41 part-time firefighters.

The Weston village administrator says the news conference will present something to the public the two communities have been working on for some time.

Elected leaders from both communities will be at Tuesday's news conference.

Newsline 9 will update this story as more details become available.
