Local firefighters get hands on training

Wausau firefighters received some hands on training today. The fire department partnered with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency for the training.

Officials lit controlled burns in four vacant buildings in Wausau. Firefighters practiced skills to put them out. Officials say the exercise was used to teach firefighters about how air flow can impact flames.

"This is some of the best training we can get. It's as real as it gets, it's real fire, just not in an emergency setting so it's like anything else, always better than simulating," Battalion Chief Paul Czarapata said.

The exercise lasted about eight hours. The buildings used were blighted and will be demolished.
