Chippewa County sheriff's officials say a woman who struck and killed a bicyclist last weekend was drinking at a bar before the crash and has a lengthy record of traffic offenses.
Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk says there's no evidence the driver took any action to avoid striking 71-year-old Robert Tschabrun as he biked near Stanley early Saturday. A passer-by found the body of the longtime Stanley dentist in a ditch and the driver's abandoned vehicle nearby. Authorities say the light on Tschabrun's helmet was still flashing and pieces of his bike were scattered nearby.
The sheriff tells the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram the driver called a friend and asked to be picked up at the crash site and taken back to the bar near Boyd. No charges have been filed.
