Adams Co. man charged with killing girlfriend expected to enter new plea

ADAMS COUNTY (WAOW) -

Adams County prosecutors say the former Marine from Adams County accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend after being startled in bed is expected to change his plea.

Coleman Dybul, 28, previously pleaded not guilty, but officials with the district attorney's office say he's expected to change his plea to not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

Dybul is charged in the March 2 shooting death of 27-year-old Toni Voss.

Prosecutors say Voss was killed after she returned to bed and it startled Dybul who reached for a shotgun he kept beside the bed and shot her. Court records say Dybul told investigators he thought Voss was being attacked.

Dybul served in the Marines from 2003 to 2007.

Court records say Dybul said he thought he had to neutralize his target, as he learned in his training. "Dybul stated, 'honestly it was like being back in Afghanistan, kill or be killed,'" the complaint said.

A plea hearing has been scheduled for June 19.
