Wis. man pleads not guilty in boy's scalding death

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- -

A Mount Pleasant man has pleaded not guilty to charges he killed his girlfriend's 3-year-old son by scalding him in water.

Twenty-six-year-old Marcus Johnson pleaded not guilty Wednesday to first-degree intentional homicide.

According to the complaint, Johnson was caring for Hunter Wise and two other children while the boy's mother was at work when the alleged abuse occurred last month.

The complaint says Hunter appeared to have been punched in the mouth, whipped and burned after defecating in his pants. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

During Johnson's preliminary hearing last week, an investigator testified that Johnson told police the boy had soiled himself and that Johnson had placed him in a tub.

The Journal Times reports Johnson remains jailed on $500,000 cash bond.
