Coming off a Division 3 title last June, Pacelli is headed to Madison yet again.
Ann Molski's squad will take on Mineral Point Friday in the quarterfinal round at Goodman Diamond.
The outstanding play of Sophomore Sami Kay Shafranski is largely to thank for the Cardinals' third straight trip to the state tournament.
Our Athlete of the Week broke open the scoring in Pacelli's 4-0 extra inning win over Shiocton in the sectional final on Saturday.
This season, Shafranski has developed into a switch hitter. And her RBI single in the 9th was her only right-handed at-bat of the game.
"It was fine with me, I actually really enjoyed it," Shafranski said. "They just taught me some cool drills, so I could learn how to do better with it. They put me in the game, I used it and I got on base."
Pacelli's coaching staff has taken advantage of Shafranski's speed this year by having her bunt and slap from the left side of the plate.
"Her overall work ethic and that smile on her face," Molski said. "She's determined. When Sammy's determined it's going to get done."
Shafranski says she was open to the idea of switch hitting because she's willing to do whatever it takes to help the Cardinals be successful.
