UPDATE: Crack in water main closes portion of Rib Mountain Drive.

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - A crack in a water main caused hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to gush out caused a partial closure of a major business road in Rib Mountain on Thursday.

Director of Public Works Darin Westover said they have the pipe exposed and are trying to repair the problem.

"We expect to have it repaired by early evening."

The southbound lanes of Rib Mountain Drive, starting at Morning Glory Lane, are closed for about a block because of the leak, he said. Traffic will be detoured to the northbound lanes, causing some minor traffic delays as vehicles were funneled into to one lane in each direction.

Two businesses in the area were without water after the leak was discovered about 10 a.m. and the water was turned off, Westover said.

The leak occurred in a 12-inch pipe and "several hundred thousand gallons" spilled out, causing the road to heave up near McDonald's, Westover said.

"We think there may be some voids below that," he said.

No one has been hurt, Westover said.
