Antigo school superintendent resigns

ANTIGO   (WAOW) - Just months after taking over as superintendent of the Antigo School District, longtime central Wisconsin educator Steven Smolek has resigned.

Smolek submitted a resignation letter to the school board Wednesday, saying he will step down July 31.

"I have not been offered another position," the letter said. "However, I do wish to pursue other career opportunities and will consider early retirement and end my career in education if another opportunity isn't available."

Smolek, 55, declined further comment Thursday, other than to say the nine-member school board has yet to accept his resignation.

School Board President Mike Boldig said a special meeting would be called in the "near future."

Asked about the resignation, Boldig said, "I was a bit upset by it but I understood it. I was not at all disappointed in his performance."

Asked whether the board could refuse to accept the resignation, Boldig   said, "Don't know. Can't say."

Smolek   said he has spent 33 years in education, including 19 in the Mosinee School District where he was a principal and director of instructional programs before taking over as superintendent in Mauston in 2008.

Antigo   hired Smolek as its top school administrator in June 2012. He said he earned $120,000 in the first year of a three-year contract.

During his tenure, voters defeated an elementary school referendum and there were proposals to consolidate seven elementary schools into three. Three new members were elected to the Antigo School Board in April and a fourth new member was recently appointed to fill a vacancy.
