Wet weather changes plans for Special Olympics

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -

Thousands of athletes, coaches, and volunteers are getting ready to take part in the Special Olympics summer games. But wet weather is forcing a change of plans.

The opening ceremonies were scheduled for Thursday evening in Stevens Point, but all the rainy, cold weather has shoved that aside.

Organizers tell Newsline 9 it wasn't a popular decision, but it had to be done for the health of the athletes. Instead, a dance will be held inside.

However, even with the wet conditions, they say the games will go on Friday. They kick off at 8:00 a.m.

Organizers say nearly 2,000 athletes will take part. Some of them say while they are disappointed about the opening ceremony being canceled, they're looking forward to the dance and to this week's competition.

"It's fun," said Amanda Stroinski of Wisconsin Rapids. "Everybody gets together. It's something special."

Organizers say that's what makes the Special Olympics so great.

"There are so many benefits to being involved in Special Olympics," said Christina Harris, Communications Director. "You come out here and you witness the most inspirational acts of kindness and you really see how the power of sports can transform lives."

But the unseasonal weather didn't stop an annual tradition earlier Thursday. The Law Enforcement Torch Run took place, beginning at the 400 Block in downtown Wausau. Newsline 9's Daniel Woodruff and Alex Haight took part in that.
