Wisconsin Dems kick off state convention

OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (AP) -

Wisconsin Democrats are gathering at an Oconomowoc resort for their annual state convention.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett warmed up the crowd Friday evening, noting the convention is being held in a city that's been a traditional Republican stronghold. He said Democrats need to speak the truth about the GOP from what he called the lion's mouth and accused the Republican Legislature and GOP Gov. Scott Walker of failing to create jobs.

The rest of the evening's agenda included speeches by U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.

Wisconsin GOP Executive Director Joe Fadness issued a general statement Friday reacting to the convention, saying the GOP has balanced the state's finances and Democrats want to go backward.

Wisconsin Democrats' chairman says it's a good thing that no Democratic candidate has emerged yet to challenge Republican Gov. Scott Walker in 2014.

State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told the crowd in a speech at the party's state convention Friday that the lack of a clear candidate is good and by design. He says there's no use giving Walker a target a day before it's necessary.

He said candidates could emerge from the ranks of the Democrats' current leaders or from the private sector. He did not elaborate in his remarks. He urged the crowd to support whoever runs against Walker by getting out and contacting voters.
