The Portage County Sheriff's Department says a 22-year-old Mosinee woman died when the car she was driving crossed the center line and smashed head-on with a van.

Alicia Schaetzl died in the crash on state Highway 161 near Nelsonville about 5 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Kevin Sorenson said in a statement Monday.

Sorenson said the crash occurred when Schaetzl's eastbound car crossed the center line and collided with the westbound van.

Two people in the van, a 57-year-old Stevens Point woman and a 58-year-old Colorado man, were injured and taken to a hospital in Marshfield, Sorenson said.

No other details were released.

Authorities say a 23-year-old woman was killed and two other people were injured in a head-on crash in Portage County.

According to sheriff's officials, the crash happened on WIS 161 near Nelsonville around 5 p.m. Sunday.

They say the female driver from Wausau was traveling east when her car crossed over the centerline, crashing into the other vehicle head-on.

She was killed in the crash.

Authorities say the driver and passenger, who police say are married, in the other vehicle were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield with non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed for three hours while crash reconstruction crews worked at the scene.

Authorities say there was also a dog in the husband and wife's vehicle. He ran away after the crash.

The crash is still under investigation.
