UPDATE: Hundreds gather in support of Treyden Kurtzweil

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of people gathered in Marshfield on Monday evening in support of a one-year-old boy battling cancer.

Just two months after he was born, Treyden Kurtzweil was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Since then, the boy and his family have spent months in the hospital, trying different treatments to help him get better.

However, Treyden's battle against leukemia took a turn for the worse last week. He and his parents had been at St. Jude's Hospital in Tennessee, but doctors sent Treyden home sick and still without a cure. Doctors told Treyden's parents there's nothing more they can do for the one-year-old.

On Monday, supporters gathered in a parking lot across from Treyden's room at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Hundreds came out to light candles, sing, and pray for Treyden on his first birthday.

"We want to thank each and every one of you for everything," Cassie Kurtzweil, Treyden's mother, told the crowd. "You guys have made Treyden's birthday fabulous."

"I think it just touches your heart," said vigil organizer Brittany Handke. "It touches home."

Many viewers have expressed the want to send cards to Treyden, or notes of support to his family. The hospital says this is the best address to use:
