30,000 bees create a buzz at FDL grocery

FOND DU LAC (WAOW) - A grocery store in Fond du Lac not only buzzed with people ... but thousands of bees, too, after they swarmed to the store's parking lot near a brat stand.

Karen Trom, a spokeswoman for Festival Foods, said some 30,000 bees arrived on Saturday afternoon, startling people operating the brat stand.

The honeybees apparently were following their queen and used a parking lot tree as a temporary haven, Trom said Wednesday.

"They were evidently lost," she said in a telephone interview from Appleton.

Some beekeepers arrived, they coaxed some bees into a box and when the queen went in, the others followed her, Trom said.

The excitement ended with just the buzz. No one got stung, Trom said.
