Wausau event marks the start of summer

Organizers were busy Friday setting up for this year's Summer Kickoff event.

"It really does kick off our entire summer series, meaning the concerts of the square start next week, we have marketplace," said Wausau Area Events Director, Kari Rasmussen.

Workers set up tents, and vendors rolled in, to transform the Oak Island Park grounds into a summer celebration.

"You'll see a lot of people, fun, music, I encourage people to bring the sleeping bag, bring the kids in pajamas, for that moonlight movie under the stars," said Rasmussen.

Rasmussen said the event brings in about 5,000 people to take part in the outdoor movies and some traditional Wisconsin food.

"We'll have kettle corn, we'll have cheese curds, shaved ice, pizza," said Rasmussen.

She said it's a more than 20-year tradition that has spurred more summer events, year after year.

"Balloon rally, all of those sorts of things roll out right after that," said Rasmussen.

The event continues to grow. Tony Andrews and his family moved to Mosinee from North Carolina. They're joining in for the very first time.

"Me and the family's going to come out and enjoy the park and the festivities and just have a blast, enjoy the sun, soak up some rays," said Andrews.

Andrews said he's excited about joining in this Wausau tradition, for the movies, cold drinks and of course, the cheese curds.

"I have tried the cheese curds, it's different, it's an acquired taste, but I like it," said Andrews.

Wausau Area Events plans more than a half-dozen summertime happenings in coming weeks.

"This symbolizes summer getting started, people getting ready to play again," said Rasmussen.
