Wausau Gus Macker Tournament could be in jeopardy

From the players to the fans, the Gus Macker Tournament has been a summertime tradition in Wausau for more than two decades.

"It's basically like the beginning of summer, once Gus Macker happens, then you know it's really summer," said Player, Grace Kennedy.

Kennedy grew up playing in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

"The dream court is always super fun when you're little and they say your names out loud and everything," said Kennedy.

But that could soon be changing.

"It's kind of sad to see how small it's gotten cause it used to be so big," said Kennedy.

Organizers said the contract with Newman Catholic is up this year.

"We haven't signed the contract yet," said Coordinator, Jill Mabry.

Event organizers said attendance has declined over the past few years, but they add it's still one of the largest Gus Macker events in the nation.

"Last year we had about 480 teams, this year we have about 400 teams, we are still the third largest tournament in the nation," said Mabry.

But even that, may not be enough to keep these basketball players coming back.

"There are a lot of fixed costs that go on with a tournament like this, things that can't be negotiated, t-shirts, trophies," said Mabry.

Organizers said negotiations are ongoing and it's too early to tell whether the Gus Macker will be held here next year.

"There's a lot of rumors out there and I can't answer that because we're still in negotiations," said Mabry.

For now, the nearly 1,500 players in the tournament say they're glad to be a part of it, as the tournament's future in Wausau remains uncertain.

The Gus Macker continues Sunday with championships for several different brackets.
