Community members celebrate McDill Pond

People in Stevens Point gathered Saturday morning to celebrate McDill Pond.

The pond was drained in 2011 after a leak was found in the Whiting Dam.

Leaders said the leak is now fixed and the water is back at normal levels.

They said the pond is an important part of the community that everyone can enjoy.

"It's been a couple of years to get the dam repaired and there was just a lot of controversy behind it and so that's kind of where I stepped in, I was able to provide the funding to pay for the repairs of the dam to move it forward," said Bob Spoerl.

Leaders said a $60,000 donation helped the area's Lake District purchase the dam.

The City of Stevens Point will maintain the dam.

Stevens Point leaders said the pond brings in about $30 million dollars for the city each year.
