Prep athletes shine at Gus Macker tourney

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

The Gus Macker tournament has taken over Wausau. And while school's out for summer, some of the area's prep athletes are taking up the opportunity to compete once again.

"There's something about it that's super fun," former DC Everest basketball player Zach Finnegan said.

It's how every basketball player grew up with the sport.

"When you're a kid growing up in your driveway, and your neighbors are playing against your brother and or sister," said Randy Bagel, co-coordinator of Wausau Area Gus Macker.

"It makes you more competitive, you can't even get a grip on this. you just fall over but you got to get up and keep playing," Stratford senior Brooke Schultze said.

Members of the Stratford girl's basketball team competed against athletes from rival schools, including Marshfield and Auburndale.

"It's fun because we knew em," Stratford senior Kelsey Boeger said. "And we're friends with them too. It's pretty awesome. A lot more fun with this though since we could hack each other a little more."

Finnegan, a recent DC Everest graduate, spent time between games watching former and future Evergreens play.

"With my friends going off to college it's kind of a last hurrah. So I enjoy it and it's nice to watch some other good players," Finnegan said.

"I think it would be cool to see this grow even more than it already has."

The sport of 3-on-3 has grown exponentially worldwide to the point where there's buzz about it possibly being added to the Olympics, leaving some wondering who would represent team USA.

"Could you imagine what it would be like to see the big three from San Antonio play the big three from Miami, three on three basketball, just like what you would see out here on the Macker level," Bagel said. "That would be a pretty cool thing."

Until then, athletes of all ages can keep dreaming, and playing.
