Stevens Point City Council approves domestic partner benefits

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -

The Stevens Point City Council will now allow city workers with domestic partners to put their significant others on the city health plan.

The proposal originally applied only to same sex couples but was amended to include heterosexual couples.

It passed in a 9 to 2 vote Monday night.

This means the city will now openly accept domestic partners under the city's health insurance plan.

Some say this was a move in the wrong direction, while others say it's a step toward equality.

"The City of Stevens Point is accepting of who you are, for what you are and it doesn't matter and that, I think is the best message and probably in essence, one of the proudest moments that I have as a mayor and I'm representing a community that sends those messages and that to me is very important," said Mayor of Stevens Point, Andrew Halverson.

"I would have rather had it not be approved at all, but I do like that they're not discriminating against opposite sex couples, I feel like we can't afford this tax burden and I think this shouldn't have come up at all," said Stevens Point resident, Jennifer Dunnett.

The mayor says the benefits registration form still needs approval. It will go to the Personnel Committee for approval next month.
