Wis. DNR urges beachgoers to play it safe

Posted:
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- -

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging beachgoers to play it safe this summer.

The DNR recommends people log on to the Wisconsin beach health website to check on water quality conditions at scores of Great Lakes and inland beaches.

The DNR also recommends avoiding swimming after heavy rains, which can sweep contaminants into lakes and rivers and affect beach water quality. Beachgoers should be wary of blue-green algae blooms, which can produce harmful toxins. If swimmers can't see their feet when they're knee-deep in the water, they should probably stay on dry land. Swimmers should always wash themselves as well as any pets that came in contact with the water at the end of the outing.
