UPDATE: Grass clippings ignite house fire

Wausau fire officials say an 88-year-old man who tried to burn grass clippings in his garage may have destroyed his home. Wausau fire crews battled the fire near Sherman Street.

Authorities say one person was home when the fire started at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, but he got out safely.

Battalion Chief Paul Czarapata says the homeowner started grass clippings on the floor of the garage on fire. The fire got too big and the man did not have a cell phone to call 911 and the fire spread into his home.

Fire officials say the garage was torn down. The home may have to be razed, but not that won't be known until the city building inspector looks at the damage.

Fire officials say no firefighters were hurt.

Authorities blocked off a section of the road near Sherman Street and West Street.
