Bombing at funeral kills 29

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -

A suicide bombing at a funeral in northwestern Pakistan has claimed 29 lives.

A witness interviewed on Pakistani television said 700 to 800 people were attending the funeral when the suicide bomber struck.

A man who was injured says a deafening explosion knocked him to the ground as a local cleric was leading prayers.

The blast was the deadliest attack in the region since a new provincial government was elected last month.

Authorities say the dead included a newly elected lawmaker who may have been the target. He supported a party who advocated negotiating with the Pakistani Taliban to bring an end to years of fighting.

He was the second provincial lawmaker affiliated with the party to be killed since the May 11 election.
