SAXON (WAOW) – The Iron County Sheriff's Department says a 42-year-old woman from the Milwaukee area was killed when an all-terrain vehicle she was a passenger on missed a corner and went over a cliff.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. Tuesday near Saxon Harbor, Sheriff Tony Furyk said in a statement Wednesday. The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was from Hales Corners.

The driver of the ATV, a 44-year-old man, was also hurt in the crash and taken to a hospital, the sheriff said. The extent of his injuries was unknown Wednesday.

Two teenagers traveling with the group witnessed the crash and told investigators that the ATV driven by the boyfriend of the woman had “a problem with the brakes” when the riders stopped on a trail just prior to the crash, Furyk said.

The teens said they saw the ATV come down the hill at Saxon Harbor and it failed to slow and negotiate the sharp corner, the sheriff said.

The teens, driving separate ATVs, were sons of the man and woman on the ATV, Furyk said.
