UPDATE: Driver dies after rural Wausau crash

WAUSAU (WAOW) – The Marathon County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday the driver of a car that crashed in rural Wausau early Saturday has died.

Lt. Dale Wisnewski said David Hirsch, 49, of Wausau, died from injuries suffered when his car missed a curve on County Highway W, went into a ditch, vaulted over a driveway and struck a power pole, ejecting him from the vehicle.

The crash of the 1998 Buick four-door happened about 2:30 a.m. Hirsch lived in the area where the crash occurred, Wisnewski said.

“Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors,” Wisnewski said. “There was an odor of alcohol.”

Preliminary results of a blood test were not immediately available, the lieutenant said.

A Wausau man was seriously injured in a crash early Saturday morning, a Marathon County Sheriff's lieutenant said.

The lieutenant said the one-car crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on County Road W in the Town of Texas. Officers said the car left the road and the driver was ejected.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown.

Sheriff's officials said the crash knocked down a power pole, causing a power outage in the area. They say it was restored later in the morning.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
