Obama to tap Dem Party official for ambassadorship

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -

President Barack Obama has chosen a top Democratic Party official and former White House aide to be the next U.S. ambassador to South Africa.

Patrick Gaspard has been the Democratic National Committee's executive director since 2011. He was White House political director before that.

Obama's deputy national security adviser says a formal announcement about Gaspard will come later Thursday.

The president arrived in Senegal on Wednesday for a weeklong visit that will take him to three countries. He is scheduled to arrive in South Africa on Friday.

Gaspard's nomination will be the latest in a series of ambassadorial announcements by Obama this month. He recently tapped his former finance director to be U.S. ambassador to Denmark and has chosen major fundraisers for postings in Spain and Germany.
