Marathon, Mosinee reach quarterfinals at 7-on-7 tourney

Mondovi won the second edition of the East Bay 7-on-7 football tournament, held Saturday at Wausau East, after defeating last year's champion, Menominee, 26-14.

Marathon lost to the eventual champion in the quarterfinals, 38-30, while Mosinee fell to Superior in the quarterfinal stage, 46-30. Superior lost by five points in the semifinals to Menominee.

Twenty teams took part in the competition, up from 16 at the inaugural tournament last year. Besides reducing the number of players to seven and wearing no pads, the 7-on-7 format is played on a 45-yard field, with both teams scoring in the same endzone. Teams play two 20-minute running clock halves and quarterbacks have four seconds to release the ball.

The 7-on-7 tournament is another opportunity for quarterbacks and skilled players to work on their game before football season is over.

"In my case, it's just really fun. You're just running around playing football. Every high school guy that plays football loves doing this. I mean even linemen would come out to play football if they really want," Marathon senior Jaron Olson said.

"My biggest challenge is covering every single guy that's right in front of your face. There'll be four guys that's right across your face. You just got to get to your zone. And hopefully these younger guys out there, you can trust your teammates."
