Rain keeping Wis. mosquitoes at bay

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- It might not sound like it makes any sense, but all the rain southern Wisconsin has seen is actually keeping mosquitoes at bay.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports the repeated soakings keep washing away stagnant water the blood-sucking pests need to breed. University of Wisconsin-Madison entomologist Phil Pellitteri says water needs to stand for 10 to 12 days for mosquitoes to breed.
He says last summer's drought is probably affecting this year's mosquito crop as well.
Pellitteri says northern Wisconsin is dealing with a large outbreak of mosquitoes, which is typical for this time of year.
