Marathon County jail to add more staff

The Marathon County Jail will soon add two more corrections officers to its staff.

The Marathon County Human Resources Committee approved the hiring of two additional full-time corrections officers at a meeting Monday. Sheriff's officials say they do have the funds for the new positions. They plan to begin hiring early this fall.

Earlier this year, questions were raised after authorities say an inmate attacked two corrections officers in March. Since that attack, a group of community members has been looking at ways to make the jail safer.

While this addition to the jail did not come from the panel, panel members say adding more staff is a step in the right direction.

The panel plans on releasing their recommendations some time next week. From there, Sheriff Scott Parks will review the report and then take action.
