Philippine army kills 7 communist rebels in clash

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -

The Philippine military says soldiers killed at least seven communist rebels in clash set off by a tip off from fed-up villagers.

Military public affairs chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala says soldiers recovered firearms and grenade launchers following the clash early Thursday with New People's Army guerrillas in Sorsogon province southeast of Manila.

He says the military suffered no casualties.

According to Zagala, residents in Juban township complained to the military about being abused by the rebels.

Talks to end the 44-year-old Maoist insurgency in the Philippines collapsed two years ago following disagreements between the two sides over the release of jailed communist leaders.
