Extra Innings: Rafters' Moroney goes from unnoticed to power hitter

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -

Jonathan Moroney has been a big contributor to the Rafters this season.

The Houston, TX-native leads the team with a .388 batting average entering Wednesday's game against Green Bay. But not many schools were willing to take a chance on the outfielder.

"I've been playing baseball since I was four years old," Moroney said.

Fast forward to high school, when Moroney helped his team to a state title in his freshman and senior years. The problem was that not many colleges were giving him any looks.

"My top recruit was a junior college in Brinnam, TX," Moroney said.

Then Texas A&M showed up and offered him a walk-on spot. Moroney says his first days as an Aggie were physically and mentally tough.

"They told me I wasn't going to be able to play," Moroney said. "They didn't see me playing until my junior year. Right before the season started, I got hot in the intersquads."

And then his coaches decided to give Moroney a chance on opening night.

"I went into the locker room. I was preparing myself for just another day at the ballpark and I went into the dugout and they have a lineup posted already and my name was there in the 6-hole, and I was like, wow," Moroney said. "That was the biggest thing ever."

Moroney went 2-for-3 that first night and eventually started in 37 games of his freshman season.

"Once I got past the first at-bat, it was smooth sailing from there."

As a rafter, Moroney is surprised by the nearly 2000 fans that show up to games. But he never forgets that his biggest fans are watching from home.

"My family watches every game on Youtube," Moroney said. "My neighbors will come and watch it at the house with them. My girlfriend, she always watches it with my family."

A year after Moroney was struggling to get noticed, he has plenty watching him now.
