Riverfront Rendezvous kicks off in Stevens Point

Stevens Point residents didn't waste anytime celebrating America’s 237th birthday with the Riverfront Rendezvous in Pioneer Park.

The celebration kicked off Thursday with the annual Carp Classic fishing contest.

"It's an annual family tradition, come out and get the gazebo here with all of the kids, have them fish and enjoy the beautiful weather," said AJ Ligman, Stevens Point resident.

Ligman says there's no better way to start the 4th of July than a fishing contest with the children.

"They get to hang out here and spend time with their cousins, try to catch a fish which today hasn't been to eventful just yet, caught a few trees, one of our kids caught a crayfish so that makes it interesting," added Ligman.

Just a little ways down the riverbank was sixth grader Evan Makuski.

He tells Newsline9 that he was catching everything but carp.

"I’ve caught a snapping turtle, a painted belly turtle, a pair of boxers and a can," said Makuski.

Newsline 9 adventured a little farther down shore and figured out why nobody else was having any luck catching carp.

Three ninth graders we're busy catching them all for themselves.

"We've caught eight fish, two 30 inchers, two 27 inchers, a 25 inchers and two 24s," said Chase Miller, ninth grader.

Miller says he and his friends have been coming here for the past three years.

Their secret for catching so many fish?

"Corn, or you can use bread balls with corn," added Miller.

The Riverfront Rendezvous will continue through the weekend with live music, food, and games.
