Strawberry picking season winds down

Strawberry picking season is winding down.

The season started late this year but farmers and pickers say it was worth the wait.

Gary Klingbeil says he's been picking strawberries for most of his life. And he's a big fan of this year's crop.

"Last year it was not as good, the berries were not as good," said Klingbeil.

Farmers say that's because of last year's drought. This year Wisconsin had a longer winter, postponing the picking season.

"The strawberries are later than normal, they're a couple of weeks later, normally the season would be over by now," said Lakeview Berry Farm Employee, Danielle Banks.

But it finally warmed up, and with the recent rain...

"There's more of them, they're bigger, people like them, and with the rain and the sun it makes them nice and sweet," said Banks.

A sweet taste Klingbeil says is worth waiting for. Picking season at Lakeview Berry Farm started around June 22nd.

Now, the season is winding down. Klingbeil is enjoying the last few days searching for the best strawberries. In one hour he picked about 20 pounds!

Klingbeil says he'll probably be back for another round of picking before the season ends.

Farmers say the strawberry picking season should be wrapping up in the next week.
