Former Woodchuck earns shot at extended stay with Phillies

Former Wisconsin Woodchucks 1st Baseman Darin Ruf is back in the big leagues.  And this time he could stick around for awhile.

Ruf was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday when the team placed Ryan Howard on the disabled list.  Shortly after Ruf joined the major league club, the team announced Howard would miss 6-8 weeks with a torn meniscus.

Ruf was hitting .266 with seven home runs and 46 RBI in 82 games at Triple A Lehigh Valley.

As a Woodchuck in 2007 Ruf finished 2nd in the Northwoods League with a .348 batting average.  He was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year at first base.

He was drafted in the 20th round in 2009 out of Creighton.  Ruf grabbed attention in the Phillies organization at Double A Reading last season with a line of .317, 38 HR and 104 RBI.

When he was originally called up by the Phillies on September 14, 2012 he became the 97th Northwoods League alumni to reach the major league level.

Now he's back with the Phillies and hoping to prove he's the heir apparent to Howard.
