Wausau City Council approves warming center location

The Wausau City Council has approved moving the city's warming shelter in an 8-3 vote.

The center opened in February in the basement of St. Paul's Church located in downtown Wausau. Now, it will move to 540 S. 3rd Avenue.

Warming center leaders say they wanted to change locations to add more space. The new building will allow them to house more people and have better amenities, including a laundry facility and showers.

"We know there's more need out there, there's no doubt about that. We had a very successful time with our guests, we got to know them, we made relationships with them, they're wonderful people. Now we want to find ways to help them better," Diane Borchardt, warming center coordinator said.

But there is some opposition to the change. During the meeting, business owners and some residents spoke out against the move. Residents told council members that moving the center to 3rd Avenue would create problems for their businesses.

After hearing both sides, the council voted to approve the change. The center will open in November.

The new location will also house the Catholic Charities offices.
