Flamingo theft snags fundraiser for child with disabilities

Chances are if you've driven around Wausau recently, you've seen flamingos in some yards.

They are not real, but the plastic pink birds flock together as part of a fundraiser.

Make Maddie Mobile is a campaign to raise money for a 4-year old girl with multiple physical and mental challenges.

Her family wants to buy a van so it is easier to transport Maddie, her wheelchair, and medical equipment.

Earlier this week, some of the fundraising flamingos vanished from a Rib Mountain yard.

Maddie's mother, Stephanie Tlusty, says she drove around frantically searching for the flamingos, but they were nowhere to be found.

She still has others. On Thursday a woman also called, offering her the use of dozens more.

"People really do want to help, especially because it is a child in need," says Tlusty.

A fundraiser takes place July 20 at the Homestead Inn.
