Syrian rebels reject Russian claims on chemicals

Syria's main Western-backed opposition group is rejecting accusations from Russia that rebels made sarin nerve gas and used it in a deadly chemical attack outside Aleppo in March.

The Syrian National Coalition calls the charges "desperate" and "fabricated." Russia is a key ally of the regime of President Bashar Assad.

Any use of chemical weapons by the rebels could reinforce Western misgivings about providing them with arms.

Russia's U.N. ambassador has blamed opposition fighters for the March attack in a government-controlled suburb of Aleppo. The rebels have blamed the government for the attack.

The U.S., Britain and France have said they have seen no evidence that the opposition has acquired or used chemical weapons.
