Dozens compete in slalom races at Whitewater Park

Paddlers hit the water at Whitewater Park Thursday morning for the start of the Open Canoe Nationals Slalom Races.

Organizers said the event brings people from across the country.

This year, the Wausau Whitewaters were selected to host the race.

Coordinators said paddlers of all ages compete against the clock, racing from one end of the course to the other.

"We like to have people come see the course, for different paddlers to experience our course, it's a pretty unique course nationwide, it's very unique," said Margie Wenzel, Coordinator.

Organizers estimate more than 80 paddlers will compete in the race over the weekend, traveling from as far as Canada and Japan.
