Former police chief killed in crash involving multiple vehicles

ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation releases new details about the accident that killed a former police chief and hurt two others.

The fatal crash was the second of two emergency crews were sent to on I-90/39 in Rock County Thursday night. The first happened around 9:00 p.m. near Janesville. Traffic was still backed up on the interstate when the second crash happened, around 10:30 p.m.

The DOT says the driver of a semi-tractor/trailer failed to slow down for the stopped vehicles in traffic, and hit several of them.

In one of those cars was Terry Hawkins, 62. His Ford Taurus was rear-ended. Five other vehicles were involved in the crash with the semi. Hawkins was killed. Two other people were hurt.

Hawkins was the former police chief of the Milton Police Department. He retired in 2004.

DOT investigators say driver fatigue could have played a role in the crash.


ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) --- Former City of Milton Police Chief, Terry L. Hawkins, was killed in a car accident on Interstate 39/90 and Avalon Road in Janesville.

Officials say Hawkins was caught in traffic backed up from a previous car accident, when a semi rear ended him.

Hawkins was declared dead at the scene.

The first accident happened at 9 p.m. which is the accident Hawkins was stuck in traffic for. 

Hawkins was hit and killed around 10:30 p.m.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating the accident.

Hawkins was Police Chief of Milton from 1990 - 2004.

Before his time in Milton he was the Chief of Police in Brillion, Wisconsin and also worked for the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, City of Darlington Police, U.S. Border Patrol and was an Air Force veteran.


ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) -- One person is dead in a crash on the interstate that held up traffic for hours.

It was one of two accidents in Rock County the Wisconsin State Patrol and emergency crews dealt with late Thursday and into Friday morning. 

The first was around 9:00 p.m. on I-90/39 between Kennedy Road and Highway 26. Traffic was blocked for about two-and-a-half hours and that scene was cleared just after 1:00 a.m. Friday.

Around 10:30, authorities responded to another crash on I-90/39 at Avalon Road. The Janesville Gazette reports one person died in that crash. The scene was cleared around 1:40 a.m.

The Wisconsin State Patrol says it will release more information Friday.


ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) -- A crash in Rock County has state officials rerouting traffic on I-39.

The multiple car crash happened around 10:30 Thursday night, the second collision on the highway that evening.

THe Rock County Sheriff's Office and the Janesville Fire Department responded to the scene, and Rock County Communications confirmed that at least one person was injured.

Wisconsin State Patrol is handling the accident and said traffic will be blocked from Avalon Road to Racine Street for more than two hours.

They recommend Northbound traffic exit at I-43, North on 140, West on US 14/WIS 11, back onto I-39/I-90. Southbound traffic will exit I-39/90 at Avalon Road and re-enter I-39/90 using the onramp from Avalon Road.
