Paddlers compete in slalom races in Wausau

The Open Canoe Nationals continued in Wausau Friday.

Organizers said dozens of paddlers hit the water at Whitewater Park for the slalom races.

Many of the paddlers have come from as far as Canada and Japan.

They said these races are a once in a lifetime experience, on a very unique course.

"We don't have such a big canoe slalom course in Japan, so I enjoy the paddling, so the big waves, big drops," said Katsu Ota.

Organizers estimate more than 80 paddlers will compete in the slalom races.

The competition continues through Sunday.
