Collectors swap stories at Iola Car Show

Thousands of classic cars are on display in Iola this weekend. We caught up with one collector who has been attending the car show for four decades.

For Dave Lindsay, collecting cars is a hobby and an obsession.

"Collecting cars is a'll die with it, but not from it," he said.

The 82-year-old from Manawa said he still remembers the first car that caught his eye.

"A 1926 Gardner. Very unusual make and it's a Cabriolet Coupe with rumble seat and it's lavender and gray with black running board and fenders," said Lindsay.

That car isn't on display in Iola this year, but Lindsay said he's brought it to the show before. He told us in the Iola Old Car Show's 41 year history he's only missed one show, the first one.

"That was because I didn't know about it," he said.

This year, he brought four cars from his 12 car collection including a 1931 Cadillac 12 Cylinder Roadster.

"They were just big, old handsome cars," he said of the automobile.

Lindsay is protective of his cars. He rarely sells them, but he admits when he does, it's tough.

"It's kind of like having one of your newborns go out the door."

At 82, he said he's not necessarily in the market for more classic cars. But at a car show like this one where thousands are on display, temptation is everywhere.

"They find you rather than you finding them," he said.

Dave Lindsay said he plans on continuing to show and preserve the classic cars he owns so they can provide a history lesson for generations to come.

The Iola Car Show wraps up on Sunday.
