UPDATE: Mosinee man finds bag with $3,000

MERRILL (WAOW) – The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department says a bag with $3,000 in cash that was left on a pickup truck and fell off on a rural road is back in the hands of its owner – thanks to a good Samaritan.

Lt. Tyler Iverson said Roger James of Mosinee was traveling to his cabin on County Road E on Sunday morning and spotted the Merrill Federal Bank bag on the road about eight miles northwest of Merrill.

The bag contained about $3,000 in cash and more than $1,000 in checks to a Merrill man, Iverson said.

James called the sheriff's department and by noon the money was returned to Tim Steinfest of rural Merrill, Iverson said.

James, the fire chief in Kronenwetter, said Monday that he and his wife were traveling to their cabin to cut the grass and he spotted the bank bag laying in the middle of the road.

He stopped, backed up, picked up the bag and handed it to his wife.

“My wife looked in there and said there's thousands of dollars in there,” James said.

James, 49, said he wouldn't have been able to sleep if he hadn't returned the money.

“I could use the money like anyone else but it is not mine to use,” he said. “If I would have lost it, I would have hoped someone would have turned it in for me.”

Steinfest had left the bag on the top off his truck, took off Sunday morning and didn't realize it was lost until it had been returned, Iverson said.

Reached Monday by telephone, Steinfest declined comment.

Iverson said Steinfest was lucky to get the money back because the bag could have flown into the ditch and never been discovered. Or somebody else could have retrieved it from the road and pocketed the cash.

We live in a community of good people, “ Iverson said. “There is still good people in the world so that is good.”
