Federal grant helps local food pantries during tough times

During the summer months local food pantries have a tough time keeping their shelves stocked.

Now some of those food pantries are getting some extra help from a federally funded grant.

The Federal Emergency Food & Shelter program is behind the grant which equals $5,000 for programs in central Wisconsin.

This is the 25th year the United Way of Inner Wisconsin has distributed the federal money from the grant.

The grant's purpose is to help food and shelter programs serve more people.

With schools out for the summer, officials say families in need have more children to feed at home and this money will help.

"A lot of our shelter residents come from kids who have free and reduced lunches so they're getting breakfast and lunch served at school, so now during the summer parents have to provide all of the meals," said Gretchen Konopacky, official with the Wisconsin Rapids Family Center.

The new grant allows food pantries and shelters to purchase more perishable items, such as fruits and vegetables, which organizers say are healthier.
