Gov. Walker leads most governors in Twitter, Facebook following

Gov. Scott Walker is near the top of Twitter royalty compared to his peers.

He has more than 66,000 followers—the seventh highest among all U.S. governors, according to a Newsline 9 analysis.

He also has a personal account with more than 50,000 followers.

Overall, Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown of California has the most followers at more than one million. He's followed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey.

On Facebook, Walker ranks even higher. His account has more than 115,000 fans, good enough for fifth best among other governors.

Republican Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona and Republican Gov. Rick Perry of Texas are on top.

Walker also has a campaign Facebook page with 145,000 fans.

"I would think his national position—his prominence—grew quite a bit during the battles at the statehouse prior to the recall, said Andrew Stoner, professor of communication at UW-Stevens Point. He says Walker also gets a lot of attention as a possible presidential candidate.

"The good thing that social networking allows you to do is to equip your supporters with basic news and information," said Stoner.

But social media carry risks, Stoner says, specifically opening yourself up to those who don't like you. Walker's policies have certainly attracted plenty of criticism, and he gets a lot of it on social media.

But will all this Tweeting and Facebooking catapult Walker to higher office or convert others to his views? Stoner believes the jury is still out.

"It reaches a lot of the same people, and then after a while, also people tune out just like they do everything else," he said. "So it's harder and harder to say."

What is certain—Walker's social media messages continue to reach a growing number of people.

Gov. Walker's office didn't respond Tuesday to requests to talk about his social media habits. However, on Wednesday the @GovWalker account sent us a tweet saying, "We use (Twitter and Facebook) to connect with the people of WI & share information."
