Extra Innings: Rafters send five to the All-Star game

Five rafters players were selected to play in next week's All-star game, but only four of them are heading to Eau Claire after Jonathan Moroney returned to Texas due to a knee injury. Still, the remaining all-stars say its an honor to be chosen.

"To be one of the few people from each team to go and play in that game...it felt pretty good," says Rafters outfielder Donnie Dewees.

Just 55 players in the Northwoods League can call themselves a 2013 All-star.
Five of them coming from the rafters and that says a lot about a team that currently has a losing record.

"We have a lot of talent on this team," raves Dewees. "The record doesn't show it, but we are a good team. We can hit the ball."

Donnie Dewees and fellow All-star Jackson Slaid each have nine home runs this season which is tied for second in the South division.

"Every summer you go and you want to develop your skill and try and be the best player you can be. So yeah, it was certainly a goal of mine, it's exciting to have achieved it."

Pitcher JP Feyereisen will also play at next week's game. It's the latest accomplishment for the UW-Stevens Point product, who was recently named WIAC pitcher of the year.

"There's some really good players in this league, so being selected from a Division 3 school is kinda cool. Playing at a small school and making it into the all-star game."

Right handed pitcher John Kravetz will complete the quartet of Rafters in Eau Claire.

Something every All-star is looking forward to next week? A much deserved break from the competition.
