Big water-skiing tournament kicks off in Wisconsin Rapids

A big water-skiing tournament is underway in Wisconsin Rapids.

Skiers are twirling, twisting and hitting the jumps at Red Sand Beach.

"It's amazing what a young group of people can do they're so talented," said Amber Krohn, coach of the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers Team.

It's one of the youngest and smallest in a field of 28 teams from across the state.

"It's hard for us to compete with the bigger teams, all of the big guys laugh, we're basically starting from the bottom," said teammates from the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua-skiers.

All the teams hope to do well enough to make nationals.

But teams tell Newsline 9 that they can't let the prospect of nationals distract them.

"As soon as the horn goes off you get this huge adrenaline rush and it's just anxiety kicks in and you just want to do everything at once," added the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua-skiers.

"We started this spring and it was 55 degrees and raining, and our kids were out there skiing," said Krohn.

Kendall Krieger is one of the competitors. Krieger does what's called "twirling." She says it's one of the more difficult routines on the water.

"I practice every day in the summer probably three hours a day, and then I have water-skiing practice all night and so it's a lot, a lot of work," added Krieger.

Other teams perform flips and spins--sometimes involving up to four people at once.

"It's a great experience especially to meet everyone from different teams and to compete against them," said Krieger.

It makes for an entertaining show as spectators get to see the product of all those hours of practice.

The water-skiing championships are hosted by the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers.

The event runs until Sunday evening and admission is free.
